Rare, Ltd. (formerly known as Rareware) is a video game company that created the Banjo-Kazooie Series, alongside with many other famous video game titles, such as Conker's Bad Fur Day, Donkey Kong 64, and Perfect Dark. Many of the members of Playtonic Games came from Rare. On September 24, 2002, Rare was bought by Microsoft to produce games for the Xbox console line.

Rare was founded under the name Ultimate: Play the Game in 1982 as a software company by Tim and Chris Stamper.
